Spring Summer 2023 Project Management Capstone

Welcome to our Capstone Project class! Our Continuing Education students are welcoming projects that will enable them to prove that they have mastered the project management principles and work practices, as established by Project Management Institute. If you have one project (or more) that involves assistance with your community outreach, social media planning, marketing, planning your business expansion or re-opening with a new Post-COVID strategy, we are able to help. Our projects run from May to July 2023 and involve groups of a minimum of 4 students working 35 hours per student, inclusive of the time required to manage the project. The actual effort dedicated to your deliverable is estimated to 22-28 hours per student. If your project requires additional resources, the groups can be resized to accommodate your body of work. The project proposed timeline can also be adapted to your specific needs.

This course will provide international students with an opportunity to apply the essential skills and knowledge they have learned throughout the School of Continuing Education, International Business Analysis Professional Development Certificate program, in a real-world setting. Working in pre-assigned groups, students will deliver a set of standard business analysis deliverables, as well as specific deliverables outlined by the partner agency. Groups will compete to deliver the best product for the same project. At the end students present their findings to the partner agency.

Managing in an International Environment

In this course, students integrate and apply a range of multifunctional business concepts from marketing, finance, and general management fields to evaluate strategic decisions undertaken by organizations operating in international settings. Students analyze the current situation of international firms and develop potential strategic alternatives for the organization. Working in small teams, 4th year business students will study your business and the best options for entering a new international market. They will provide an analysis of top options and provide recommendations with an implementation plan. Please note: Your initial acceptance in this project does not guarantee that the professor will select your organization. We will be contacting each organization to ensure that the scope of the project fits the requirements of this class. Preference will be given this semester to organizations in the energy/green energy sector looking at ways to internationalize.
Change Management Consultation

Is your business or organization going through a major change? We’re looking for Organizational Change Industry projects. Our students are currently studying Organizational Development, with a specific focus on Change Management. The cohort consist of 3rd year bachelors students and 2nd year (senior) diploma students. Industry partners selected will be a “Live Case Study” for the course, which means many students will be working in teams on developing tools and resources to support the changes in each company/organization. In other words, lots of ideas and resources for your company! Please note: Your initial acceptance in this project does not guarantee that the professor will select your organization. We will be contacting each organization to ensure that the scope of the project fits the requirements of this class. All selected community partners must be able to do in-person presentations if Alberta Health Services/MacEwan University deems it safe to do so.

We are currently looking for partners in the community to partner with our Organizational Management course: Contemporary Organizational Behaviour and Theory. Students will look at how individuals are shaped and actively shape their organizational environment, and the effect of this dynamic for an organization’s success. Students will be reaching out to you to interview you about your organization the first week of October. Attendance at virtual presentations associated with the particular course on either January 30th or February 1st Your feedback at this presentation will help the students complete their final recommendation report, which you will receive.

If so, we have 3rd and 4th year business students that are seeking opportunities to help you in the form of a for-credit Business Consulting Project. This course is an undergraduate Organizational Management course on Business Consulting and is composed of students from all streams of business (i.e., human resources, marketing, finance, etc.) looking to put those business skills to good use! Please note: We will be accepting twice as many project applications as there are student teams. Students will choose which projects they want to work with that fill their own specific skill sets during the first week of classes in September.

In the fall semester, sustainability students from different backgrounds and areas of study in learning about sustainable challenges will work with community partners. Students will use a holistic approach, project planning, evaluation, and communications related to sustainability challenges to support your organization's desire to contribute to a sustainable future. Overview We have 4th year business students that are seeking opportunities to help you in the form of a Strategic Plan. In this course, students learn how to craft, execute and evaluate, business strategies by applying scientific methods and industry best practices to a variety of situations. This course is composed of students from all streams of business (i.e., human resources, marketing, finance, etc.). How this works Teams of 4-5 students will be provided with your challenges. The teams will meet with your organization to determine a mutual “best-fit” for a project. Time-commitment: Commitment to the five visits (virtual or in-person), as indicated above is a must.

In this third year class, human resource management students are studying the learning and development process in HR. Through their work with community partner projects, students will gain real-world experience in skill development, and provide organizations with custom professional skill development recommendations and/or workshops for organizations on specific personnel challenges.

In the fall semester (Sept to Dec) fourth year Social Work students will work with local social service organizations to support training and resource development for your teams. Working in small groups, these MacEwan University students will work with organizations to design and complete a specified project over 10 weeks. Students will use all the experience and learnings gained throughout their program to consult, plan, and execute your project. These students would love to get some experience working with a community partner and building their community social work skills.

Is your business or organization looking for an assessment and recommendations on how to improve or maintain functioning to reach organizational Prime? Our 3rd and 4th year business students may be able to assist! Your student team will interview an employee/owner of an organization. The questions have the objective to identify in which stage of the organizational lifecycle the company is positioned. The group must respond to the following: 1. Which phase of the Organizational Lifecycle describes better an organization studied (see chart below)? 2. Provide 3 suggestions for this company to develop towards, return to, or stay at the Prime phase. 3. In terms of implementation strategy, where should the organization start and why (i.e., Sub-system Authorance, Teleological, or Rewards). The organization will receive a copy of the students' final report for this project.

Partnership Opportunity: no-fee help with building a plan to address United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for your business or organization. Want to be more sustainable but don’t know where to start? Students from our School of Continuing Education will map out a concept and build a project plan or proposal. To learn more about the UN SDGs, please check out the short video An Introduction to the UN SDGs (1:57) How this works The instructor and Community Partnership Developer will select projects in early Dec. They will confirm with the selected CPs by the end of Dec. In Jan, you will virtually meet with your student team to brief them and answer questions. Projects are tied to a student’s overall course mark and must be completed within a 2-month period.
