MCG is offering a unique internship opportunity for a law student with a strong interest in patent filing systems and intellectual property in the field of technology and innovation. This role is ideal for candidates eager to deepen their understanding of how technical inventions are protected and commercialized through the patent system.


Key Responsibilities:



  • Assist in drafting, formatting, and reviewing patent applications and related legal documents;
  • Conduct independent research on patentability, prior art, and IP laws in Canada and internationally;
  • Provide legal support to internal teams regarding intellectual property rights and strategy;
  • Help maintain organized documentation and IP filing records;
Deliverables

Drafted Patent Application(s)

  • At least one complete draft of a patent application (or sections thereof), prepared in collaboration with technical experts.

Prior Art Search Report

  • A documented report identifying relevant prior art for a given invention, including summaries and legal analysis of key references.

Patentability Assessment Memo

  • Legal memorandum assessing the patentability of a proposed innovation based on existing laws and search results.

Intellectual Property Strategy Brief

  • A high-level strategy document outlining recommendations for patent filing (jurisdictions, timing, claims scope, etc.) for a specific product or technology.

Legal Research Compendium

  • A compiled and annotated reference guide or summary of relevant IP laws, case law, and procedures (Canada, U.S., EU or others).

Template Bank

  • Internally validated templates for standard patent forms, NDA clauses, invention disclosures, and correspondence.

Presentation or Training Session

  • End-of-internship presentation summarizing key findings, process improvements, or legal insights, potentially to legal or technical staff.

Weekly Activity Logs and Reflection Notes

  • Documented logs or journals summarizing weekly tasks, learning outcomes, and encountered challenges or questions.
